The Devil's Round Up 3rd April 2011

Round UpThis weeks round up of the tracks that I haven't had the space to post...

City Reign
From: Manchester, United Kingdom

More salt of the earth indie pop that couldn't be more English if it was served up with roast beef and a yorkshire pud.

Nightbox's Pyramid has more hooks than a fisherman's tackle box.

Pyramid by nightbox

From: Kuopio, Finland

Starts with a sound that'll shake the fillings from your teeth before morphing into something much more pleasing to the ears.

Drunken Captain by Neufvoin

Nick Hudson
From: Brighton, United Kingdom

Nick Hudson comes highly recommended by none other than Julian Cope and any friend of Julian's is a friend of the Devil's. 'Idiot Song' from his recently released album My Antique Son' is hauntingly, beautiful. It's reminiscent of Pink Floyd at their most emotional.

Sian Vs Psycatron

Raucous rock 'n roll that harks back to a golden age when hair was high and soles were crepe.

Doom funk pop that sounds a little like a bi-polar Talking Heads on a downer.

Why Does It Always Reign On Me?

City Reign
From: Manchester, United Kingdom

City ReignAs you know it always rains in Manchester so it's surprising that there hasn't been a band from the north western musical metropolis called City Reign. Until now that is. Unless the quartet are all Manchester City fans and chose the name as a prediction on the future of Manchester City since they won the football owner lottery. Actually according to their myspace site they've taken their name from the Ryan Adams song 'City Rain, City Streets' because the band's chief songwriters, Chris Bull and Mike Grice met 4 years ago at a Ryan Adams concert. Which unfortunately blows my neat theories right out of the water.

The band have chosen a straightforward name which fits perfectly their straightforward indie sound. It's honest to goodness, wholemeal indie pop music that sounds better wit nowt taken out and nothing artificially added.

Their new single 'Out In The Cold', released on Car Boot Records, sounds like a blast from a golden past, a past when life was simpler and less complicated and rose tinted glasses were prescribed on the NHS. It sounds like Idlewild with the pop dial turned to max.

It's time to ditch the digital enhancements and associated fakery and indulge in a little analog therapy.
