RemodelFrom: London, United Kingdom
With a sound that would have been de riguer when the Jam were at the peak of their powers or at the height of the Oasis -v- Blur wars, London four piece Remodel are perfectly named. In 2010 they sound like a relic of a different age, an age when British bands knew how to write intelligent pop/punk songs that engage the brain and stir the blood. Unfortunately it's a sound that seems doomed to gather dust in the museum of Britpop while the kids gorge themselves on the plastic manufactured fast food of the x factor and boyband reunions.
Remodel's new album 'Statues' is a valiant attempt to resurrect true British pop from the bottom of the indie landfill and rescue it from xfactorised oblivion. British Racing Green (the Devil's favourite track from the album) sounds like the short lived and much lamented (at least by me) Members wrestling with the best of Menswear (who were unfairly maligned in the British music press). This Isn't A Love Song sounds like Spizz Energi covering an Ordinary Boys b-side. Ma Bousoulle however breaks the mold a little with a sound that can only have been generated if the band had been kept in solitary confinement with only the collected works of The Sound and The Comsat Angels to keep them company.
You can try to repackage and re-evaluate all you like but it's going to take a wholescale Remodelling for British music take it's rightful place at the head of the pack.
Phew got through the whole piece without mentioning the Kinks (doh!).
