WonderswanFrom: Leeds, United Kingdom
According to Scorpio PR & Review, the 3rd largest fully independent music e-zine online in the UK, Wonderswan's debut is little more than 'uninteresting vocals that sound simply awful over the rabble in the background'. They have no idea why Dance To The Radio (Wonderswan's) have licence Wonderswan's debut to be pressed and that there really are no positives (they) can take from it.
Those of you out there in the real world who have been regular readers of the blog will know that the Devil doesn't always swim with the tide and I disagree with Scorpio PR & Review. Charming, dishevelled and shambolically amateurish Wonderswan are a throwback to an earlier, less cynical musical age. An age of late night Peel sessions, of DIY production, of hand crafted record sleeves, of music for the sake of music. An antidote to the slick, professional over cooked, over hyped, cynical modern music business driven by nothing more than shifting units.
If you love the early days of Pavement, the first Wedding Present album and the entire output of the Nightingales then Wonderswan could be your new favourite band. If you're a major label boss in a shiny ill fitting suit then Wonderswan could be your least favourite nightmare. I know which side of the fence I'm on do you?
