Fuel Assistance Benefits.
The program can help you take care of any use of household fuels like: Oil, gas, and electricity depending on what you use to heat your apartment in the winter. The good thing about this service is that if your rent includes heat, the program may even pay for your rent or part of it.
When To Apply.
Can residents submit their applications for the fuel assistance program at any time? Yes and no... Most times the program requires people to submit applications before heating season of the present year (which this time is 2008-2009) by April 30 of that year (right now will be 2009 not 2008), sometimes you can submit it after but you may need to way longer for approval. But, approval also depends on a few things, the number one is if the program have sufficient funds. It's recommended to apply as soon as possible.
For those resident that received fuel assistance help the year before, they will send you an application by mail for the current year (2008 or 2009). If for any reason they don't send you the application by mail, just apply by phone calling your local fuel assistance agency, at the end of this post you will find a list or directory of the current Massachusetts agencies complete with addresses and phone numbers.

What If I Get Cash Assistance or Food Stamp Benefits?
All these help programs are independent assistance, meaning that fuel assistance benefits will not reduce your current cash or food stamp benefits.

1.- If you get food stamp benefits, and
2.- If you get fuel assistance, and
3.- If you heat is part of your rent,
You my dear friend may be able to receive more food stamp benefits.
So, if you current situation meets this requirements, just call your case worker to see if you qualify for more food stamp benefits.
I know this is wrong, because they already know that you are receiving other benefits, so they are the ones that should be contacting you by phone or mail to tell you that you are entitle to more food stamp help... But, they don't do it, simple because this type of government agencies will do anything to provide less help.
PROBLEMS With Your Fuel Assistance Worker or Agency.
Another thing you should know is that most program workers are lazy, slow, and also have bad customer service. Why? Who knows! Fuel Assistance Verification.
Here is a list of all the paperwork that you will need for verification:
- You need to show proof of your current monthly income, which need to include pay stubs, TAFDC or EAEDC enclosed notice which have your monthly cash assistance, and any other type of income like SSI or disability.
- Bank accounts current balance.
Then mail all that information with the application, or take it to the closes agency. So, remember to save all your income notices until you complete applying for the benefits.
